Special Olympics is a global nonprofit organization targeting the nearly 200 million people round the world who have intellectual disabilities. With a presence in nearly 200 countries worldwide we are constantly expanding. We can say with all truth that “the sun never sets on the Special Olympics movement.”

We use donated funds to secure practice facilities, obtain equipment and uniforms, and send athletes, coaches and chaperones to area and state tournaments.   

Every Special Olympics program must raise its own funds to support its programs.  There is no government support to our program and we receive no funding from the national or state Special Olympics organizations.  Our funding comes from people in the Black Hills community!  Each year, the Law Enforcement Torch Run organization sponsors the Polar Plunge in Spearfish and provides us with our single largest donation of the year.

We are grateful to all the individuals, corporations, and organizations who donate!  Without these donations, we could not continue to provide the opportunities to an ever-growing number of athletes who wish to participate.
